mallewi (always in lowercase) is a self-taught, multi-disciplinary artist from Baltimore based in Los Angeles, blending poetry, music, and visual arts into a unique expression of creativity. With a limitless imagination and a DIY spirit, mallewi has been a creative since childhood—winning citywide writing contests, excelling in theatre, receiving an International Baccalaureate Diploma with a concentration in visual arts, and even crafting a Billie Holiday mural for the Eubie Blake Center at just 12 years old.
While experiencing bouts of depression as a young adult, mallewi coped by writing poetry. From poetry to songwriting, from teaching themself how to sing to diving into production, mallewi's artistry is constantly evolving. Influenced by artists like Maxwell, Living Colour, Seal, Incubus, Imogen Heap, Johnnie Wilder Jr., and an eclectic mix of deep house, folk, disco, R&B, soul, funk, rock, musical theatre, and more, their sound is as genre-blurring as their inspirations.
2019 saw the release of THE GARDEN, a folk-soul EP, followed by RETINA in 2020, which reached #21 on iTunes' Top 25 Alternative Album Summer Releases. Now, mallewi is gearing up for their next chapter—APOLLO, a neo-soul, pop, and R&B-infused project dropping in 2025, exploring love, loss, sexuality, existentialism, and renewal.
